Topic: Poll

So to speak.

I was let go before the holidays because "due to a business decision, the web devs had to go back and redo all the work that I did on the sites I did" for the company I was working for. Which, in no certain terms, is bullspit.

Whatever, I am over it. No reason to stew and stay angry about it, if they want to be that superficial about things.

I posted links in the Previews forum, those links are now gone, but from what I gathered, things were working, the only things in question were design, and typography (of which I had no control over).

So I'd like to get a gauge from the fine folks here at Swankland. Is my work sub-par? Or is my work passable? Or what do you think of my work http://six03.com/work/ (see also the past works).

I think it was just a matter of devs thinking they could do better and then going over my code. I don't know, like I said, it's not worth stewing about.

Just wanted honest opinions of my work and my skills (of which I stand behind 10,000%).

Thanks.

Damn, that's cold. Right before Christmas?

Having had the pleasure of working with you on a few things over the years I know that you are not just up to standard but indeed a careful, thoughtful and knowledgeable designer and developer.

Re: Poll

Yes, right before Christmas. I had been penniless for the last 2+ months before today, even then, I had to pay bills. Leaving me with nothing.

I appreciate the kind words, Alex. The same can be said about yourself. Hopefully at some point, we can not only meet, but work together on a project in the future. I just got hired again, freelance, so this may be contract, may not. All I know is, I've stopped looking on craigslist for employment. They're all flakes and have tweaked out on me, the past half-dozen people that have hired me off CL.

Re: Poll

Todd, I haven't ever worked with you, but from "speaking" with you here, I don't think you are sub-par in any way.

I would say though, stay the fuck away from CL--I've lost money and only gained spam from using it and I make no excuses for swearing, as it is not the place to hang out on if you seriously want work in our industry. There are too many script kids willing to work for peanuts. I'd suggest ODesk (http://www.odesk.com/jobs/), as you can sit online exams to prove your worth, which in turn allow potential clients to filter out anyone signing up for a job. I've had some success, but you end up spending a lot of time pitching rather than working, so it's for when you're a little more desperate. It's also not just web design, so you can take on a boring data entry job if you really need the cash.

I've also considered what Jen told me about, http://www.aquent.com/FindWork/index.html, but I never did get around to getting their enrollment done. However, from what I saw and spoke with them about on the phone, this is the place you'll find the more permanent work and I'd recommend signing up with them.

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate it. My lessons have been learned on CL... too many "business owners" that don't know the web aspect, don't know what they want re: their sites, and have no clue & want to hire nickel & dime script kiddies.

I'm also looking on http://authenticjobs.com http://jobs.37signals.com & http://krop.com - I have had luck in the past with those 3.

Re: Poll

Additionally, I have to say that most of my web work comes from recommendations around my local area. So it may be worth mentioning to anyone you know that you have time to do freelance web development right now, so they can pass it on. There is always a new business that needs a website on the cheap. For those, I re-use a simple xhtml/css template and change out graphics and text, to provide a relatively cheap service to them, but with quality results as well. These gets me repeat business when they want to upgrade and they tell their friends. I push these things out in less than 10 hours and charge $500. So a little local foot-pounding can really help.

Re: Poll

That's what I have done in the past & presently. Unfortunately, here, no one knows what they want & they don't want to be educated. They want to take on the 1st over-priced, under-skilled hacks that dot this area like the mumps. There is no talent in New Hampshire at all (Northern NH anyway) that is worth a spit. Besides myself, and I stand behind that claim.
